The rocker, 71, was travelling in his Porsche car in Surrey, England on Tuesday (26Apr16) when a police officer forced him to stop at a service station.

 

The former Cream guitarist, who lives in a Surrey mansion near to his birthplace of Ripley, was driving in the area on the A3 dual carriageway road - which has a speed limit of 40mph - when reprimanded by officers. It is not known what speed the rocker was driving at.

 

"Suddenly Eric Clapton arrived at the petrol station," an onlooker tells Britain's Daily Mail newspaper. "It was very funny because we all thought he was there to be part of the film, but then a police car pulled up.

 

"Eric had to sit in the front seat with the policeman. He was in there for ages and was clearly getting a good telling off...By the end Eric was apologising profusely."

 

The incident is not the first time the rock legend has been stopped by police officers for driving too fast.

 

In 1988 the star was pulled over by British officers after allegedly overtaking a police car at over 100 miles per hour (mph) in his Ferrari. Despite his lawyer claiming he was hurrying to a charity cricket match, the star was banned from driving for six weeks and fined $220 (£151).

 

In 2000 his U.K. driving licence was suspended for six months after being caught exceeding a 30 mph speed limit, again near his Surrey home.

 

French authorities also handed him a $750 (£515) fine and suspended his licence to drive in the country after catching him driving faster than the speed limit in 2004.
