Hope Sandoval is a legend in the alt-music world, the MAZZY STAR singer is also the front woman of another band called HOPE SANDOVAL AND THE WARM INVENTIONS, that she formed in 2000 with MY BLOODY VALENTINE drummer Colm Ó Cíosóig. Together they released 3 albums and numerous EPs, and the latest in date ‘Son of A Lady’ just dropped last month. It follows their 2016 album ‘Until The Hunter’ which was featuring guest performances from Dirt Blue GeneMariee SiouxKurt Vile and the ‘Artist General’ Michael Masley.

‘Son of A Lady’ only features 3 songs showcasing Hope’s legendary dreamy vocals over a guitar loop plus a cello and an upright bass (‘Sleep’), whereas the title song, ‘Son of A Lady’ is even more ethereal, slowing floating in space, between a whisper and a dream evaporating in front of your eyes. It’s slightly reminiscent of Hope’ s collaboration with MASSIVE ATTACK – she, for example, sang ‘Paradise Circus’ on the band’s ‘Heliogoland’.

The three tracks seem to freeze space and time, they are an hypnotic experience haunted by Hope’s gentle and shy delivery, which seems to wander between detachment, disillusion and comfort. The last track, ‘Let Me Get There’, is a solo version of a song previously released with Kurt Vile, but this acoustic version allows us to appreciate her hushed and delicate vocals which soon wrap you in a warm embrace with subtle emotion.

HOPE SANDOVAL AND THE WARM INVENTIONS will be performing at Desert Daze on Sunday night at 7:45 pm. Listen to ‘Son of a Lady’ below:
