MESHUGGAH - 'The Violent Sleep of Reason' (2016)
03 November 2016„Your time has come!
Declare the majesty fallen!“
Barks furiously Jens Kidman accompanied by guitar riffs splitting your mind in two, sinking and emerging among psychopatic solos before plunging unextectedly into a mirky post rock/ambient finale.
Even this track alone (aptly named 'Stifled') is enough to justify the high score 'The Violent Sleep of Reason' is bound to get. Still, there are nine equally important reasons for that, for each of this ten tracks towers above you like a 10-story building – magnificent to look at but meancingly dangerous as well.
This is indeed a monument. And a clear statement of intent – MESHUGGAH are going to stay and better themselves – both in being one of the most uncompromisingly extreme bands on the planet but in playing as skillfully and mindbendingly good as well. Rarely does a band with a musical history of 27 years stand up to time in such a fashion – they do not bend to tendencies and they show no signs of fatigue but actually do things faster and better with each new album.
Therefore 'The Violent Sleep of Reason' is not only a great follow-up to 'Koloss' or simply more-of-the-same from MESHUGGAH. It's a perfect slab of next level djent, neck snapping intensity and coldly coordinated fury all packed into layered, though-provocative progressive metal madness. It is quite a feat for main songwritters Haake, Hagström and Lövgren – they have achived a truly monstrous sound that is so well sculpted that would fit both at Brutal Assault and at Montreau's famous jazz fest.
Not need to point out specific tracks – all are mandatory.
